When I tell people I have a personal trainer and go to boot camp, the most common question I get is ‘So, what’s it like?’.
I wish there was a simple answer.
Of course, I could say that personal training is a workout with a fitness professional in a gym or, occasionally, outdoors. Personal training can be one-on-one or in a small group, usually no more than three people. Boot camp is a group exercise session almost always held outside with up to around 12 participants. A personal trainer usually guides the boot camp activities. None of that gives anyone any idea of what actually happens at either personal training or boot camp.
The best way I can think of to realistically describe what I’m doing most mornings at about 5.30am is to keep a diary. Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays I’m at boot camp with a small team of people and a personal trainer. Sessions are usually outside and typically last between an hour and and hour and a half. There is a lot of running. I’m a terrible runner…
On Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays I spend around an hour in a fitness studio with the same personal trainer who takes the boot camp sessions. On these days I’m doing less cardiovascular exercise and and more strength training. Lots of weight lifting and core stability work. I can do more push ups than I used to but that’s not saying a whole lot.
Why so much exercise? I’ve been training for a number of years and my body is so used to all of the basics that it’s starting to get a bit on the smooshy side of things. I’m going to give this personal training schedule a go for a few months to see if I’m fitter and stronger. Feel free to join in – I’ll be posting all of the session details so you can try the workouts for yourself.
Of course, if you don’t already exercise regularly, be careful. These workouts are intended to be very intense, particularly the bootcamp sessions. If you are really keen to train along with me (in a virtual sense) and are out of shape please see your doctor first.
